Eddie Alvarez to face Andre Dida in first round of DREAM LWGP
Eddie Alvarez confirmed to FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) on Thursday afternoon that he has signed a contract to participate in DREAM’s lightweight Grand Prix.
DREAM, a collaborative effort between K-1’s HEROS and former staff members of PRIDE, will begin its tournament on March 15 in Japan. Alvarez stated that he is scheduled to fight Andre “Dida” Amade on that date during the tournament’s first round.
“The fight is 100 percent,” began Alvarez. “I just got a call from my manager, Monte Cox, everything is underway. Everything is approved and I will be heading over there (Japan) on the 10th to fight in the lightweight Grand Prix. I’m excited.”
Alavrez, who signed a three fight agreement with EliteXC in January, will be competing in DREAM with the promotion’s blessing.
“Monte (Cox) talked it over with EliteXC and EliteXC was happy to work with DREAM,” Alvarez responded when asked if special permission was needed to compete in a tournament that could require Alvarez to fight on three separate DREAM shows. “I’m sure they want to do business with them in the future so I’m sure they are more than happy to lend me over and let me do the fight.”
While Alvarez wasn’t positive as to when he would be fighting in the States again, he did indicate that a May date for a tentative EliteXC show in Atlantic City was possible. However, Alvarez was quick to add that he’s focused almost solely on making sure he advances into the second round of the DREAM tournament and that he has been training three times a day to ensure he can meet the lightweight requirements of 154 pounds.

Paulão ready for Sonnen and Marshall
Credit Tatame.com
After defeating Chael Sonnen at WEC 31, when did his first belt defence at 93kg category, the Judo and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Paulão Filho has a fight settled down to next March 26th against the same Sonnen, because, besides the victory, the difficulty imposed by the American made the promoters arrange a revenge. “I have two more fights and accepted this revenge, that I believe it’s an absurd, because the line needs to move, but they think Sonnen almost won me so I’ll fight”, said Paulão, that after this fight will face the American fighter Doug Marshall, that owns WEC’s belt at 93kg category.
“Too many people don’t know, but I have six fights at 83kg and ten at 93kg category, and we arranged that after this fight I’ll go there and face Doug Marshall for WEC’s belt. When I lose too much weight I hurt my health, like at last fight, when I needed to do eight hours of sauna. The first four were great, but after that I needed two hours to lose 400g”, said Paulão, that used his experience on difficulties on losing weight to comment the possibility that Wanderlei Silva come down to 83kg category.
“I believe he’ll feel. First, he needs to do a test, lose weight and do an experience. He needs to see if it’ll be good for him, because he’ll lose too mush physical strength and Wanderlei isn’t a technical guy and will lose, coming down weight, 50% of explosion and aggressiveness. If he fights at 83kg like he always does, he won’t finish the fight”, said Paulão.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura rumored for UFC 84
Credit MMAMANIA
Light heavyweights Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-2) and Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7) will look for their first wins inside the Octagon when the two Pride FC veterans lock horns at UFC 84 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to MMAWeekly.com.
Both fighters lost to Lyoto Machida in their respective debuts under the UFC banner. In fact, Sokoudjou lost via submission (arm triangle choke) in round two of his bout with Machida at UFC 79: “Nemesis” back in December 2007.
It was a hard trip back to reality for the “African Assassin” after two impressive back-to- back knockout wins against top 205-pound fighters, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira while competing for Pride FC.
The Team Quest fighter— a decorated Judo practitioner—is up against a tough opponent who shares a similar fighting background.
Nakamura trains under Hidehiko Yoshida — a 1992 Judo Olympic gold medalist who is also a Pride FC veteran. He (Nakamura) lost to Machida via unanimous decision and after the bout was suspended for three months because of a positive test for marijuana.
The Japanese fighter has been tested against some of the top talent in the sport throughout his career, competing against standouts such as Murilo Bustamante (win), Kevin Randleman (win), Igor Vovchanchyn (win), Dan Henderson (loss), Wanderlei Silva (loss), Josh Barnett (loss) and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua (loss).
This is an important fight for Sokoudjou and Nakamura because a loss could send one of them packing and looking for a new employer.
The rumored fight card is as follows:
B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (UFC lightweight title)
Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida
Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
Ivan Salaverry vs. Rousimar Palhares

Lyoto must train with Anderson Silva

With the fight against Tito Ortiz confirmed at UFC 85, Lyoto Machida told to TATAME’s site about his training and what he waits for the fight, that will be at May 24th at Las Vegas, United States. “I’m doing he basic training, Jiu-Jitsu with gi, Carate with gi, as I used to do with my family, to do after the specific training for the fight. I’m thinking about doing Wrestling, but I’m only thinking yet”, told the carateca, that pretends training with Anderson Silva for the fight.
“He is at USA and as soon as his fight finishes we must contact him to do this first training at Black House at Rio de Janeiro or here. I let him focused at his fight, I don’t wanna disturb him”, said Lyoto, that bet on a Brazilian victory. “I believe a lot on Anderson Silva because he is a guy that dedicates a lot and is well prepared. He has a big arsenal. Without demereting Dan Henderson, that made a great history inside MMA, Anderson is in a great time and I believe that he has much more chances”, bet Lyoto, that believes that the best way to get out of the octagon with a victory is fighting stand. “Anderson beats really strong, thought, one punch well done is hard for Dan Henderson to get it. He can take a lot, but if one or two punches get in he’s capable to win the fight”, said Machida.

Brock Lesnar vs. Justin McCully in Works for UFC 85
Posted by MMA Junkie on February 23, 2008 at 8:00 am ET
As expected Brock Lesnar (1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will likely return to the octagon at UFC 85, and the fight could come against Team Punishment’s Justin McCully (8-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC).
UFC 85 takes place June 7 at the O2 Arena in London, England.
McCully confirmed that he’s been approached about the heavyweight fight while a guest on Friday’s edition of “Inside MMA,” a weekly MMA news show that airs on HDNet.
McCully hasn’t made a decision about the fight and only confirmed that it’s in the works.
“We’ve been talking about fighting this big, huge guy who just crossed over from a wrestling promotion,” McCully said of Lesnar. “That’s in talks right now. I hope it comes through. I really like that fight.“
Lesnar, a former NCAA Division I national wrestling champion and World Wrestling Entertainment performer, made his much-hyped UFC debut earlier this month at UFC 81. Although he’d batter his opponent for all but a few seconds of the televised fight, Lesnar ultimately suffered a first-round submission via kneebar to former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir.
McCully, a Tito Ortiz training partner who returned to competition in 2006 after a three-year layoff, was a late replacement to fight Antoni Hardonk at UFC Fight Night 9. Although he looked a little rusty in the April 2007 bouy, McCully earned a unanimous-decision victory. It was his fourth consecutive win.
McCully was then expected to fight Cheick Kongo in March but had to pull out of the bout with an elbow injury.

THREE KNOCKDOWN RULE KAYOED

JUST like in their first outing, the contentious three-knockdown rule will not be in effect when Manny Pacquiao meets Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time.
In an email, World Boxing Council (WBC) secretary-general Mauricio Sulaiman said the 12-round championship rematch between Marquez and Pacquiao will be using the Unified Rules of the influential Association of Boxing Commission.
“That rule will not be in effect. The USA commission does not allow any other rule except the unified rules,” said Sulaiman, son of longtime WBC president Jose Sulaiman. In their first encounter back in May 2004, Pacquiao floored Marquez three times in the opening round of their 12-round world featherweight championship held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Had the three knockdown rule enforced at that time, Pacquiao would have been declared winner by technical knockout.
Marquez however took advantage of the ruling as he miraculously salvaged a 12-round split draw to keep his International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association (WBA) 126-lb belts while Pacquiao managed to keep his reputation as the division’s Peoples champion.
In that fight Judge Burt Clements was unaware that he could score a round 10-6 for the fighter who scored three knockdowns. Clements thought the Nevada Athletic Commission did not want its judges to score a round 10-6.
Judge John Stewart called the fight 115-110 for Pacquiao, Guy Jutras called it 115-110 for Marquez. Clements scored the fight 113-113 making it a draw. The official scorecards showed that had Clements scored the first round 10-6 Pacquiao would have won.
The commission said there is no rule that covered the situation and no grounds for a protest because it was a judgment call.
This coming March 15, Marquez and Pacquiao will clash for the Mexican’s WBC world super featherweight belt.
Meanwhile, Filipino boxer Vernie Torres said that Pacquiao is unperturbed about the latest controversy bugging the Filipino boxing superstar’s out-of-ring circumstances.
“Hindi naman siya apektado sa ngayon kasi focus siya sa laban niya kay Marquez,” said Torres “Alam ni Manny kung gaano ka-importante and laban kaya hindi niya muna iniintindi yung kaso.”
Last week Pacquiao again hugged the limelight after an amount of $180,000 was reportedly withdrawn from one of his bank accounts by one of his supposed trusted staff.
The wife of Pacquiao’s driver Joseph Jose is being tagged as the culprit, identified as Pia Quijada who reportedly forged the superstar boxer’s signature.
Sources from Los Angeles revealed that what is puzzling police who are investigating the case is that Pacquiao claims he was not aware of the bank account that totaled $200,000.
Quijada’s mother who also lives in LA has sought forgiveness from Pacquiao and told the boxer that the money was used for the education of the suspect’s children.
Another thing baffling investigators is the reported move of Pacquiao to drop the case.
According to Torres, Pacquiao is leaving everything to police investigators handling the case.
As for Pacquiao’s training, Torres said American trainer Freddie Roach has so far assembled an array of sparring partners in anticipation of possible adjustments Marquez might utilize come fight time.

Werdum comments on Brandon Vera
Credit Graciemag.com
Back on the list of the greatest challengers to the UFC heavyweight title, now belonging to Rodrigo Minotauro, is Fabricio Werdum who has his next appointment in the octagon scheduled on his way to the coveted belt. The Chute Boxe black belt’s adversary will be Brandon Vera, a striker with nine MMA fights and but a single loss, to towering Tim Sylvia at UFC 77.
On the list of Vera’s triumphs his knockouts of Frank Mir and Brazilian Fabiano Pega-Leve can be included. The bout will take place on June 7th in London at UFC 85, so the Brazilian will have three months to prepare. GRACIEMAG.com spoke with the two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion about his hopes for the fight, Brandon Vera and training.
GRACIEMAG.com: How has your break after the fight with Napao been?
Werdum: I spend a month in Spain with my family teaching a lot of seminars and assisting some of my students. I’m in Porto Alegre now where we are setting up a new Chute Boxe training center, which should be inaugurated on March 13th. However, I will be doing my training for the fight in Curitiba and in the future we will do an exchange between the two academies.
GRACIEMAG.com: And what about the fight with Brandon Vera, is it a done deal? What do you know about his game?
Werdum: It’s 100% confirmed. I accepted the fight right off the bat and I think it was well matched. It will be a good fight, it won’t stop, anything can happen. He’s a tough guy who’s going after his. He’s big and fast, a tall striker, he’s 1.88meters, and good with his knees, he’s also a Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and has gotten the submission in several fights.
GRACIEMAG.com: When will you be returning to heavy training? Have you talked to the team to lay out a strategy for the fight?
Werdum: I’ll go back to heavy training and see about my plan on Monday. I have three months to get ready. I’ll prepare myself a lot better for this fight, like never before. I want to be ready for anything.
GRACIEMAG.com: Do you think it’s already about time to fight for the title or do you think it’s best not rush things?
Werdum: After the fight with Napao, Dana White said I’d returned to the top 5 and that maybe I would get a shot at the title, but it wasn’t for sure. I already thought before I’d have to fight one more time. I think everything is happening at the right time, I don’t want to do anything prematurely. I don’t have the right to now because I lost to Arlovsky; if I’d won it would be another story. I have two more appearances on my UFC contract, I want to do this one and then fight for the belt.
GRACIEMAG.com: Would you like to face Minotauro for the belt? What did you think of his fight with Tim Sylvia?
Werdum: I was sure that Minotauro would submit him, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy. He’s really good, is always ahead of his adversary, thinking about the future. He surely practiced that move a lot. I’d like to fight him, to get a revenge match. I always modeled myself on him, but at the time we fought, I was not well, my Master Mauricao had just passed away.

'Ultimate Fighter' personality draws three years probation

SAN DIEGO – Reality TV personality Jon Koppenhaver was sentenced to three years probation Thursday and had assault charges reduced in Superior Court.
Koppenhaver, 26, a trainer at San Diego's Undisputed Fitness and Training Center, faces a year in jail if he violates probation. He is also known as “War Machine” on Spike TV's reality series “The Ultimate Fighter.”
He pleaded guilty in December to felony assault in the choking of a man outside the fitness center. Those charges were reduced to a misdemeanor.
The professional cage-fighter choked a Las Vegas man unconscious and hit him in the face Sept. 2.
The victim, Darren Zatkow, testified in court last December that he was visiting San Diego when he was assaulted outside the fitness club after calling a group of shirtless men “tough guys.”
Zatkow said he was grabbed from behind in a chokehold and lost consciousness. He was punched in the face while he was on the ground and suffered facial fractures and nerve damage.
Judge Frank Brown said in December that Koppenhaver's plea agreement could result in a misdemeanor punishment. Zatkow and the prosecutor said that was acceptable.
“I'm not interested in destroying somebody's life,” Zatkow said previously.
Prosecutor David Williams III said he agreed to have the charges lowered because Zatkow did not oppose the lower charges and Zatkow's injuries were not as serious as initially thought.
Koppenhaver's career as a professional fighter was not a factor in having the charges lowered, Williams said.
In addition to probation, Koppenhaver was ordered to complete 30 days of public works service, such as picking up trash along the road, Williams said. Brown also ordered Koppenhaver to stay away from Zatkow and pay $2,300 in restitution
Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), a cast member from “The Ultimate Fighter 6” who posted a Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night performance at the show’s live finale, will next fight May 24 at UFC 84.
The 26-year-old fighter mentioned the in a recent MySpace bulletin. A possible opponent was not named
F*ck McCain!
Republicans or democrats, American MMA athletes and fans already has a candidate that won’t be voted for president. Candidate on next election, the republican John McCain fought for a long time against MMA at USA. While MMA was growing at United States and all over the world, John did whatever he could to prohibit events like UFC. For one moment, the UFC had to be transferred to Alabama by plane, with octagon and everything, to be done. John McCain will have to face some “strong” opponents at presidential run.
Pacquiao gunning for KO, says Roach

MANILA, Philippines -- Knockdowns won’t do this time. Manny Pacquiao intends to knock out Juan Manuel Marquez in their rematch on March 15 in Las Vegas.
World-renowned trainer Freddie Roach revealed the plan to Brad Cooney of Boxingtalk Tuesday. “We are going for the knockout. We have all intentions of knocking him (Marquez) out,” Roach said.
In their first encounter in May 2004, Pacquiao felled Marquez three times in the first round only to allow the Mexican to recover and forge a controversial draw. Now, the Filipino ring icon is bent on finishing him off.
“If Manny gets Marquez down this time, he’ll keep him down,” said Roach, who’s whipping Pacquiao into tiptop shape for Pacquiao-Marquez II at his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.
According to Roach, he hasn’t seen Pacquiao so focused and so excited since the first time he fought Marco Antonio (Barrera) in 2003.
“He’s looking very good,” said Roach. “We had nine rounds of sparring on Saturday, and we used three sparring partners. I have a strong guy to press Manny, I got a counter puncher, and I got a guy that will run, all to give Manny different looks. We know the keys to victory, and we’ll show you what they are on fight night.”
Roach said he expects Marquez to again fight with a counter punching style though he doubts whether it will still be as effective.
“The best fight that I ever seen Marquez in was against Pacquiao, and he’ll need to fight like that again,” added Roach, who sees no problem with Pacquiao’s weight which was 139 lbs last week.
“We need to lose nine lbs with a month to go, so no problem at all,” said Roach. “He’s eating good, he’s running good, his discipline is good. Manny is very focused, so don’t worry, we are not going to wait for the last minute to make weight, that’s for sure.”
Scrambling to make 130 lbs in his rematch against Marco Antonio Barrera last October, Pacquiao wasn’t able to win by knockout and had to settle for a unanimous decision verdict.
This time, Roach assures: “We are going to fight a smart fight. We are going for the knockout.”

Several sites obtained salary figures from this past Saturday's EliteXC: Street Certified card via the Florida State Boxing Commission.
One of the most notable sites to obtain the figures from the FSBC was MMAjunkie.com. According to the report, Kimbo Slice was paid $175,000 for his performance while Tank Abbott received $126,000.
But the most stunning revelation was that undercard fighter Moyses Gabin was paid just $1 for his win over Jirka Hlavati. Junkie followed up with the commission about the number and indicated that the commission confirmed it.
ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) contacted EliteXC officials for a comment and all indications are that Gabin's compensation was handled by an outside promoter.
"That fight was put together by a local promoter," EliteXC Head of Fighter Operations Jeremy Lappen stated in an e-mail. "Gabin is paid a salary by the promoter who sponsored that bout."

The Return of Wanderlei
Credit Xtreme Couture Blog
The Axe Murderer is back in Las Vegas. And he’s intent on learning how to wrestle and how to use the cage. What better way to do that than to study with the Master?
That’s exactly what he’s doing. Wanderlei is studying under Randy twice a week in the mornings. In addition to that he will be joining our Pro Team for practice. Despite physically training here for the Chuck fight, Wanderlei didn’t train with our team outside of sparring with Shawn Tompkins. Instead he worked with his personal trainers. Wanderlei tells us that when he went to rope a dope Chuck in the first round of their fight he realized he couldn’t bounce of the cage and counter Chuck the way he could coming off the ropes in the PRIDE ring.
Training partner Phil Baroni says Wanderlei is already picking up some of Randy’s tricks after the first session. “He feels strong. He’s open minded and willing to learn. He picks things up fast.” The New York Bad Ass adds, “Once he learns to use the cage and incorporate wrestling into his game he’ll be really tough to beat in the UFC. It’s an honor to train with Wanderlei. He’s a guy I’ve always tried to emulate and I look up to him.”
Randy says that he and Wanderlei will continue working up until Wand’s next fight. We’re not sure if we’re allowed to say who he is fighting next. But we’re told it will happen in May and it is someone who has fought Chuck. He and the rest of the UFC’s 205lb division had best be on notice. There will be a new and improved Wanderlei next time he steps in the cage. Wanderlei tells us he’d like to rack up a couple of wins and rematch Chuck on New Year’s. That’s a fight we’d love to see.

Mirko Cro Cop answers fans questions
1. Do you plan on holding seminars or private training sessions for people; or is it 100% career from this day forth?
Answer: In this moment all I can think of is to get back on track and win my next fight.
2. When you first started training to be a pro-fighter, what kind of reaction did you get from your parents?
Like other parents, they were worried, but I just felt that being a fighter is what I should do in my life.
3. Do you plan on still focusing part of your training for cage fighting such as defending and utilizing elbows?
Yes, I’ll still train in the cage as I would really like to fight in there again and show a lot more then I did in the UFC.
4. Have you ever even remotely considered fighting in the light heavyweight division for the UFC or do you consider yourself a true natural heavyweight?
I’m a natural heavyweight and I’ll always fight in heavyweight division.
5. What does your diet consist of to keep you in the top physical shape you are in ? Also what food is a guilty pleasure for you?
I eat mostly meat, I don't like vegetables. I have no special diet program, but I'm trying to keep away from food that's commonly considered bad for professional sportsmen.
6. Are you interested in being a coach one day?
I guess that would be a natural course of action, but at this moment I’m focused on my career.
7. Have you found the happiness again that you had in PRIDE? The happiness that you had when you won the Open Weight Grand Prix?
I was very excited to be in Japan again. It really feels good and yes, it was a strong reminder of some memorable moments.
8. Do you think its possible for you to have success in the UFC in the future, despite the UFC rules, no sockerkicks, no kness to head on ground, Octagon instead of ring etc?
Of course. I can be successful in the cage as well and I hope I’ll have a chance to prove that one day.”
9. Do you plan on fighting Gabriel Gonzaga again in a rematch since he has lost two bouts, as have you?
I’m not sure if this match-up is possible right now, but I would gladly fight him again.
10. What will you do different in a rematch with Gonzaga?
I’ll just be my true self.
11. The UFC released your from the contract. It’s not something that they usually do. What was different in your case?
We came up to an agreement and I respect them for acting professionally. We’ve left the doors open for doing business together in the future again.
12. For how long are you planning to fight in MMA?
As long as I’m healthy and able to train at maximum intensity.
13. How many fights will you have this year?
Probably three, but it's too soon to tell for sure.
14. Are you still working with Ivan Hyppolite, or is Marijan Zizanovic head coach now?
Marijan Zizanovic is head coach now, but I'll cooperate with Ivan and his gym.
15. What is your current training camp like?
Marijan Zizanovic is my Muay Thai coach and Marcio Corletta is in charge for BJJ. Igor Pokrajac and Hrvoje Kisicek are my sparring partners.
16. Have you thought to utilize the head kicks less since it is your signature move and a lot of people know of it since you still have outstanding striking?
I can still kick hard and even improve my kicks. However, my goal is to have more than one dangerous weapon. And I have some up my sleeves.
17. Who is more important for you to fight, Gonzaga or Kongo?
I would like to fight them both again.
18. A lot of fighters have bad things to say about Dana White, do you have any comments on this?
In my case Dana White acted professionally and I respect him for that. I have nothing bad to say about him.
19. Would you like to face Jerome Le Banner in an MMA fight?
My goal is to be a champion and I’ll fight anyone who is on my way.
20. Anderson Silva uses his long strong legs really good as defense, but also as offense on the ground, are you only training defense in BJJ so far?
No, I train many aspects of the ground game, but I’ll always be a stand-up fighter.
21. Isn't this a bad idea, going to Japan with different rules once again?
I fight in the ring for a long time and I will need no adjustment at all.
22. What do you prefer, to get the UFC belt at your comeback after your Dream fights, or to beat Fedor Emelianenko?
Good question. Both goals are almost equally important I guess. A slight advantage goes to beating Fedor.
23. Besides Minotauro and Fedor, who else would you like to fight before your career ends one day?
I don’t have a wish list, I’ll just fight anyone if the conditions are good.
24. Is it easier now to train after the nose surgery? Do you feel you have more cardio now? In sparring, do you feel overly protective of your nose? Will it affect you in the future fights?
My nose is doing well and I’m certainly not overly protective of it. I have no trouble breathing anymore and it can only help.
25. Don't you think that training methods also may have been a factor and are in need of reassessment (for any future involvement in the UFC)?
Yes, I think that some elements of my training should have been different, but as I said before - a mental blockade and a low motivation were the reasons for my bad performances.
Kid Yamamoto interview
Offical Heros interview
Credit Sukimma for the translation.
HEROS official website posted the interview of Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto. HEROS had an interview with him right before the press conference of DREAM on Feb 13.
- Could you tell me about your fight against Rani Yahya on NYE?
I'm satisfied with that fight. I kept my pace without giving him chance to do anything.
- Yahya threw punches though?
I knew he came to take me down though he couldn't make a tackle. So, he decided to throw strikes. He didn't have other choices. I got to know how to handle that kind of fighter.
- I said you didn't like fighting Jujitsu specialists, and now you have a counter-plan for them?
Yes. I think I don't have any problem fighting them for now. I could have a good experience on NYE.
- Did you get confidence by defeating Yahya who is the WEC Bantam Weight champion?
Yes. That's why I would like to fight champions.
- Your fight got the highest rating of the television program.
Thanks. I'm glad to have a great fight for my fans.
- You could finish the end of 2007 by winning and your gym, Krazy Bee, is expanding and doing good business.
Yes, my gym is getting bigger and my students got more motivation. My students fight in DREAM.
- Are you talking about Kotetsu Boku? What do you think about DREAM?
I really think making an alliance is great. It's better to work together for fans and fighters. Fans can see more exciting fights and MMA will be more popular at the same time.
- What kind of performance would you like to do?
Just do like I have done in HERO'S. I could make the HERO'S light weight exciting. I would like to put more energy in our new event and want to give opportunities for young fighters.
- The light weight class doesn't have a tournament this year.
I don't even know other fighters in my class. I will fight fighters who I fought before and show good fights. Then, more fighters will sign up with this event.
- What is your resolution of this year?
My resolution is not to get injured. I don't think I will though. I want to continue winning.
- Do you show us KO'ing your opponents?
Absolutely. I'm highly motivated fighting in the new event.
- Any message to your fans?
I think Japanese MMA will be amazing from now on because 2 big organizations combined into one. Thank you for supporting me and I will do my best.
K.J. Noons fires back at Diaz and camp
Credit
Sam Caplin at Pro elite
In an exclusive interview with ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) on Wednesday afternoon, EliteXC lightweight champion K.J. Noons fired back at the camp of Nick Diaz following a post on the web site GracieFighter.com that accuses Noons of turning down a proposed rematch against Niaz on April 26 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
GracieFighter.com, which is operated by Diaz's long-time trainer, Cesar Gracie, posted the following:
KJ Noons has refused a rematch with Nick Diaz. Noons won the EliteXC title after defeating Diaz by doctor's stoppage due to a cut. Diaz subsequently went in for plastic surgery after a specialist determined that the sharpness of the bones above his eyes would lead to more cuts and make it impossible for him to pursue a successful MMA career. The surgery was a complete success.
EliteXC suggested a rematch just as the UFC had when Vitor Belfort defeated Randy Couture for their title due to a cut, however KJ and his camp have now responded that they do not want anything to do with a rematch. Diaz will still be fighting at the event against another EliteXC fighter, most likely Muhsin Corbbrey (6-2).
Noons, normally calm and reserved, had already read the comments when contacted by ProElite.com and took great issue with the claims made by Diaz's camp. They are claims he categorically disputed.
"First of all, I don't dodge anybody," Noons stated in an uncharacteristic stern tone. "Whoever is the best, I want to fight them. As champion, you can't decline who you want to fight. You only have one option as to who you're going to fight, and that's the best. Whoever the best is, that's who I have to fight. In regard to a rematch with Nick, that would be a great pay day for me. Unfortunately, he's not the best."
Noons continued to rebut GracieFighter.com's statements, claiming that he has no incentive to dodge a rematch with Diaz because he considers it an "easy pay day." He indicated that he felt if anyone was entitled to a rematch, he deserved one against Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett stemming from a knockout loss during EliteXC's first-ever show last February.
"As for Nick, of course he's going to get a rematch in the future," Noons commented. "They created a weight division for this guy (and) he's such a big crybaby. Eventually they are going to be able to rebuild him and of course he's going to get a rematch but he's not the best right now. So I'd love an easy pay day. If he deserves a rematch right now, what about my rematch with Krazy Horse? I'd love a rematch with Krazy Horse and I've won a few fights so I think I'm more deserving than someone like Diaz in regards to getting a rematch right now. As far as declining the fight, I don't decline fights. You don't get an option as champion to decline a fight. You're only option is to fight the best."
Noons not only took issue with the claims from Diaz's camp during the interview but expressed frustrations with the fact that he believes he's not getting the credit he deserves for his title victory over Diaz at EliteXC's Renegade show in Corpus Christi, Texas this past November.
"People are doubting me after that fight and all I can do is take everyone back to what happened in that fight," said Noons. "The fight was one round with Nick. I stuffed his takedowns like eight times; he couldn't take me down. I out-boxed the kid; I hit him at will. I had a scratch on my nose, at most. I kneed the guy in the face. I dropped him on his ass with a right hand. He fell to the ground and was wiping the ground because he probably shit on himself. He had cuts on his both eyes and his nose. He spit his mouth piece out because he couldn't breath through his nose. The kid has re-constructive surgery on his face -- plastic surgery. It was one round and I was ready to go four more. I don't get what people wanted me to do? Did they want me to kill the kid?"
When asked if he would be involved with the April 26 card in Honolulu, Noons revealed that a title match with Yves Edwards was on the verge of being made official.
"What's coming up next for me is that I'm going to fight the best," answered Noons when asked about his next opponent. "And the best right now is Yves Edwards. EliteXC is going to put that fight together and I believe that the best up and coming guy should get the next shot and I want to test my skills. He (Diaz) doesn't deserve a rematch; he can earn his way like everybody else. Just because you can take a beating doesn't mean you're the best. The next best guy is Yves and that's where I'm at right now.
"Edwards is a former UFC veteran who has fought a bunch of great guys. I love the guy's style. I'm a personal fan of the guy. We used to fight back in the day about ten years ago back in Houston. We go way back and I have a lot of respect for the guy. He's a great contender... That's what EliteXC wants. That's what he wants. And that's what I want."
Noons ended the interview on a positive note by thank his friends and family for their recent support, but before the interview concluded he still had a parting shot for critics.
"I read something in an article with somebody talking about that I was jumping around (after the fight vs. Diaz) like I won the lottery," said the lightweight champion. "I don't think a lot of people know, but I just want to point out that I have over 30 professional fights between boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA. I have a very long background in amateur fighting. I was fighting back in the day when Nick Diaz was still getting picked on in high school like a little dork. So I don't look at this like a lottery win because this is a lifetime thing for me...
"I don't know where people come up with these rankings. It's almost like you've these guys sitting behind a computer and they just rank guys that they have a hard-on for. You've got Sean Sherk in the top 10, a guy who tested positive for steroids. If that's the case, then they should let anyone who's tested positive for drugs in the top 10. So even though Diaz tested positive for drugs, he beat Gomi, which means I should be in the top 10 somewhere. I don't really understand that."

Randy Couture with HDNet
Credit Sherdog.com
Article
by Adam Swift (aswift@sherdog.com)
Last week Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights made headlines when it sued Zuffa, parent company of the UFC, in district court in Dallas. As first reported by Sherdog.com, the suit seeks declaratory relief concerning Randy Couture (Pictures)'s contractual status under a promotional contract with Zuffa.
New details of the action have been revealed in the complaint obtained by Sherdog.com. According to the filing, HDNet Fights has entered into a contract with Couture that is scheduled to commence upon the expiration of his Zuffa promotional agreement. At that time, the company plans to promote a fight between Couture and Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) in Dallas, assuming terms can be reached with the highly regarded Russian heavyweight.
The existence of an actual contract between HDNet Fights and Couture is believed to be key to the company's action in Texas. Without it, it is unlikely that the court would find an actual controversy ripe for adjudication.
According to the filing, Couture has stated that he believes his Zuffa promotional contract expires with the stated term of the agreement in July, while Zuffa maintains that the contract remains valid indefinitely under the infamous "retirement clause." In the complaint, HDNet Fights characterized Zuffa's contention as "outrageous."
"Zuffa's position regarding Couture is both illegal and involves critical timing," the filing states. "First, like all fighters, Couture's ability to fight at a championship level will diminish as he ages. Through their actions, Zuffa seeks to ensure that Couture is prevented from gainful employment and practicing his craft until he cannot be an elite fighter. Importantly, the law in Texas is clear that indefinite employment restrictions such as Zuffa claims to be enforcing are per se illegal and against public policy."
Both sides agree that the one-year non-compete provision contained in Couture's employment contract with the UFC expires on Oct. 12, meaning that even with a favorable outcome concerning the term of Couture's promotional contract, the earliest Couture-Fedor could take place would be in the fall.
The complaint also recognizes Zuffa as the undisputed market leader in the MMA industry.
"A key technique utilized by Zuffa to maintain their iron grip on the MMA industry is litigation and intimidation," the complaint reads. "Just a cursory review of court dockets in Nevada demonstrate the remarkably litigious nature of Zuffa and their willingness to tie their opponents down with expensive and lengthy court battles regardless of merits."
In a nod to pending litigation in Nevada, where Zuffa has sued Couture and as yet unnamed defendants for, among other things, conspiracy to commit tortous acts, the complaint notes that "HDNet did not want or intend in any way for such an agreement to induce or cause Couture to breach his UFC Fight Contract or any other agreement(s) he might have with Zuffa and/or UFC or to interfere with any valid contract that Couture might have."
Accordingly, HDNet Fights' contract with Couture will only become effective upon a declaration by the court that Zuffa's promotional agreement is void, invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part, or upon a declaration of the effective date on which Couture's contract with HDNet Fights may begin without violating any provisions of his contract with Zuffa.

Quick Quotes from Renzo Gracie
Credit mma.tv/tuf
Renzo Gracie was on TUF tonight to field questions from fans
"i don't agree with my cousin rickson regarding his statement on the low level of fighters today. i think they are much better today then when royce was fighting in the first ufc. back then it was a joke. it was like beating drunk people at the bar. thank god i got a chance to fight tough guys and really test my skills and the quality of my jiu jitsu."
"1. toughest fight was bj penn really though it is always my next one 2.i would like to finish the job against frank shamrock for my next fight3. 3. a lot of good new guys out there and i am fortunate to have a lot of them in my academy and i have the pleasure of watching them perform. i have a lot of sympathy for matt serra, ricardo almeida and john danaher. they are great teachers, great people and great instructors of bjj. 4. i look up to everyone who steps up in the ring and gives his best, even if he is fresh meat. he then has my admiration."
"i spit on oyama because he was acting like i was the one stalling when it was actually him. even after i spit on him, he still wouldn't fight. stalling was the only way he survived. when he fought ryan, he tried to fight and ryan broke his arm"
"i think drugs in mma is cheating. people are looking for short cuts. it takes real time to get where you must be, and short cuts are only for insecure people "
"i think the reason for my success is that i am honest with myself. i try not to be something i am not. and people are sympathetic to that because they appreciate honesty. "

“Everybody is talking about Jardine, but nothing has been made official,” Silva wrote. “I think it would be a good opponent because his style matches with mine, and certainly, no one would be a better choice to be my next opponent.“
KJ Noons refuses fight with Diaz, Nick Diaz vs. Muhsin Corbbrey at April 26 EliteXC

KJ Noons Declines Rematch

EliteXC lightweight Nick Diaz (15-7) will return to competition after an upset loss to K.J. Noons and will fight Muhsin Corbbrey (6-2) at EliteXC’s April 26 show in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Sam Caplan of fiveounesofpain.com today confirmed the fight with Corbbrey’s camp.
Back in January MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported that EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw anticipated an April return for Diaz, a former UFC contender whom EliteXC signed to a long-term deal last year. Diaz and Noons fought for the organization’s vacant lightweight title in November, but the bout was stopped after the first round because of multiple cuts on Diaz’s face. He had surgery to repair significant scar tissue soon after that TKO loss.
Back in February 2007 Diaz earned a submission victory over PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi. However, Diaz failed a drug test due to marijuana, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission stripped Diaz of the win and ruled the fight a no-contest. He returned for a split-decision victory over Mike Aina in September before the loss to Noons in November.
Diaz is now 4-1 (with one no-contest) in his past six fights.
He’ll now take on Corbbrey, an up-and-comer who made a name for himself with back-to-back victories in EliteXC’s “ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series” events, which air on Showtime. Corbbrey scored a unanimous-decision victory over Lee Gibson (11-3) in July and a first-round submission of Bobby McMaster (7-2) in October.
Corbbrey is a boxing and Muay Thai competitor who’s also competed in several of the world’s top grappling competitions.
The April 26 event will be EliteXC’s second ever in Hawaii. The organization’ s September 2007 “Uprising” card took place Oahu, where Robbie Lawler defeated Murilo “Ninja” Rua in the night’s main event.

Joe Silva: Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida is on, Ortiz's last UFC fight
Much thanks to MMAFightline for the following:
"Despite rumors to the contrary, fueled in large part by comments made in a recent interview by former UFC fighter Babalu Sobral Tito Ortiz will face Lyoto Machida at UFC 84.
Sources close to Machida have confirmed that Joe Silva has a contract signed by both fighters and that the fight is a "go" for May 24 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Big thanks to Tagg Radio's The Lights Out Show for breaking the information.
Tito Ortiz is coming off of a controversial draw against Rashad Evens in which he was deducted a point for holding the fence. The point deduction likely cost him the victory.
Machida last fought at UFC 79; coming away with a huge victory against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. He is undefeated in twelve professional contests including a notable list of wins over Stephan Bonnar, Rich Franklin, B.J. Penn, Kazuhiro Nakamura."
Tito says there is 0% chance of fighting in the UFC after this fight
The future of Mirko
On the UFC
Fighting in the cage just didn't feel good. The real problem was in me, not in the UFC or the cage. That wasn't who I am and I will return one day to fight in the cage. I owe this to all of my fans and especially my UK fans.
On Dana White
I can perfectly understand a decreased interest in me after my bad performances. It's just business and you can't blame the UFC or Mr. White for putting me aside. I can only say that Mr. White acted very professional and I had no problem in getting released from my UFC contract. I also hope that we'll always respect each other and perhaps work together in the future.
On Dream and the contract
My dream has come true, I'll fight in Japan again. I've signed a three fight contract with a possibility of extension.
It's where I had some memorable moments, where I feel at home. DREAM is a new organization with a good management and huge potential. Japan is a big market and these guys know how to bring something to a high level. I'll do my best to help them on that way.
On title fights
Yes, there were some talk of me being involved in a first DREAM heavyweight title fight. I'm welcoming this opportunity and I'm willing to fight anyone they put me against. I feel reborn and I'll be on a quest for the most anticipated titles in the world.
On possible Cro Cop vs Fedor II
The moment our first fight finished I wanted to fight him again. He's a brilliant fighter and it would be a honor to fight him again. This fight is really a nice thought, but I'll take one step at a time and we'll see what happens.
On problems and defeats
The losses came from a lack of motivation. I was really empty, I had no fire left in me. It's something that is probably the worst scenario for a professional fighter. What was left for me was to give a serious thought about if I had anything left in me. Now I feel different, but you just can't bring the time back. Hopefully I'll have my chance to fight against these fighters again.

Wanderlei Silva to middleweight?
Despite his loss to Chuck Liddell on December 29th, the Brazilian Wanderlei Silva demonstrated a lot of heart and physical vigor to fans, who await his return to the octagon.
Over the last few days rumors have surfaced saying Wand is about to confirm his next fight and his adversary will likely be one of the fighters most linked to a shot at the belt: winner of the third season of the “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show Keith Jardine. To clear matters up, GRACIEMAG.com contacted Wand’s team in the United States and spoke with his physical trainer Rafael Alejarra.
“Wanderlei made the most of his holidays to rest his body and mind. But we’ve already done a bit of training this weekend and starting tomorrow things will pick up. As we only just got back now and today is a holiday here (Las Vegas) we can’t confirm anything about the next fight, if just because there is the chance Wand will drop down in weight. Every fight and adversary is different, which is why we have to wait to define our training plan. If he should drop to middleweight, we will work on his losing weight and preserving his muscle mass, losing only water and fat and not strength and size, since he normally weight 98 kilos. But nothing’s for sure yet, we’ll wait and see,” said Alejarra, who in January spent time in Cuba where he watched up close the training methods of athletes in the country.
